For the love of Jazz, Community and the Culture.
about us
UManyano Lwe Jazz (ULJ) is an independent cultural institution, festival platform, and creative gathering rooted in a shared love of music, community, and cultural exchange.
Founded in Johannesburg, ULJ has grown from an intimate jazz gathering into one of Southern Africa’s most distinctive boutique music and cultural experiences, bringing together artists, audiences, thinkers, and creatives from across the region and the global diaspora.
Our programming spans contemporary African jazz, alternative music, spiritual improvisation, folk traditions, electronic experimentation, and other boundary-pushing forms that remain grounded in live musicianship and cultural connection. We create spaces where established legends and emerging voices can share the same stage, and where audiences can encounter music that is both deeply rooted and forward-looking.
The name UManyano comes from a Nguni word meaning “coming together.” That spirit continues to guide everything we do.
While jazz remains at the heart of our identity, our curatorial approach embraces the full spectrum of contemporary African and diasporic expression, including soul, folk, spiritual music, alternative sounds, electronic experimentation, improvisation, and boundary-pushing live performance.
Each December, ULJ transforms Johannesburg into a meeting point for artists and audiences seeking something deeper than a concert and more intimate than a mass-market festival. Across two carefully curated days, world-class music, conversation, food, art, and community come together to create an experience that is both globally relevant and deeply rooted in place.
Today, ULJ serves as a platform for established legends, emerging voices, and cultural innovators from Southern Africa and around the world. As we enter our next chapter, in celebration of our fifth anniversary, we remain committed to preserving the intimacy, warmth, and sense of belonging that have defined UManyano from the beginning, even as we continue to grow into a regional cultural and international destination.
For the love of Jazz, Community and
the Culture.
